CALIFORNIA: ‘Racist’ Halloween Decorations?
LOS ANGELES — Some in the community of Wagon Wheel are worried about the message sent by decorations that appeared overnight in the neighborhood, while others say it is merely a “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” tribute.
‘Racist’ display or tribute to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre?
A concerned neighbor sent KTLA an image of what appears to be a dark-skinned person hanging by a noose, a confederate flag and a sign reading “South Texas” used as Halloween decor in the 30 block of Homestead Drive in the master-planned community near Trabuco Canyon.
Later in the day, the figure on the noose was replaced with a different body, but the confederate flag remained.
Both the homeowner and the resident who sent in the image declined to speak on record. However, one neighbor told KTLA the items are part of an annual “Texas Chain Saw Massacre”-themed set-up with a tunnel leading trick-or-treaters to the door.
But another neighbor didn’t think the image put forth by the display was appropriate, or even relevant to the holiday.
“It doesn’t seem right,” he said, identifying himself only as a veteran Marine. “If it’s going to be Halloween, let it be Halloween. That’s more racial tone I think than anything else and it’s offensive.”
“They feel free to do this, and I think it’s wrong,” he added. “It’s not America.”
